The law

In the UK, due to the serious health risks of exposure to asbestos fibres, legislation called the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 will apply to a museum premises if its collections or buildings contain asbestos.

The law obliges employers to act to prevent employees and others from being exposed to asbestos in non-domestic premises. They must also identify a ‘duty holder’ (see What must a museum do?), provide suitable training to employees liable to be exposed to asbestos, and provide information about the location and condition of known and suspected asbestos to employees and others such as contractors.
