The HSE advises that,
If asbestos materials are in good condition, and in a place where they are unlikely to be disturbed, then they should not cause any harm. It is only when the materials are damaged or disturbed, so that fibres are released, that asbestos can become a danger.
- Avoid disturbing asbestos in objects. If you suspect asbestos, and do not know whether it is dangerous, do not touch it!
- Use a consistent methodology for predicting the likelihood of asbestos such as an asbestos checklist.
- Improve your knowledge. Asbestos awareness training is available from many occupational health and safety providers.
