What can I do?

  • Use this eTool and other information to review whether objects you are working with are likely to contain a biohazard.
  • If there is an identified risk from a specific biological agent, before starting work:
    • Warn others.
    • Check that you have an up-to-date immunisation (as applicable).
    • Know what the symptoms of exposure are.
    • Have an emergency plan of action if exposure occurs.
  • Do not undertake the work if you are susceptible to infection.
  • Confine biohazardous materials at source.
  • Avoid direct contact with materials that contain a biohazard.
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the hazard and risk.
