What must a museum do?

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) employers are required to act where lead hazards exist in a workplace.

  • Review exposure to lead, i.e. how many people are being exposed and for how long. Museums must act and check if employees or others are likely being exposed to lead hazards in collections.
  • Ensure control measures to prevent or reduce exposure to lead are available, are working as intended, and, are being correctly used by employees and others. Museums should provide essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as thin nitrile gloves to reduce inadvertent ingestion and skin contact.
