What must a museum do?

  • Assess the risk of nitrate film by investigating the whereabouts and quantity of nitrate in the building, the condition of the film, the importance / significance of the image material, and the resources available or required to manage it safely.
  • Find ways to reduce fire risks from stored nitrate film, e.g. ventilated flammable material storage cabinets.
  • Have an emergency procedure.
  • Ensure the risk assessment for using and keeping nitrate film is shared with everyone likely to need to know about it.

Museums can eliminate the hazard by digitising and transferring nitrate film to another organisation.
